What I have read so far is great. I got it yesterday. 5/2/2010

Space Crusaders!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jeff Preston

Again Aaron Dembski-Bowden has written another gritty, dirty story full of actually interesting characters. His action scenes are largely clear, the dialogue witty, the description good. I cannot say whether there are 40k canon issues as I’m not as familiar as some other reviewers. The plot was interesting and kept me going. The ending was a bit of a twist but good. Another fantastic book

Rated 5 out of 5 by Rosethorn

What can i say another brilliant book from the fantastic Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Helsreach continues the fantastc space marine battle series with non stop action and thrills it was very hard to put this book down at the end of the day 5 out of 5 :D

An epic worthy to His name

Rated 5 out of 5 by Iron Halo

This being the first novel from this author that I've read, Helsreach truly captures the character of the Black Templars and how they fight in His name. Well done master Aaron, well done!

Great story....lots of room for improvement!

Rated 4 out of 5 by udontwannaknow

A good read as the story flows very well. but I felt the author did not do some some of the space marine characters justice and did not give them the personality of the Black Templars...some of them he described very well. ON the flip side, the author did a great job of composing the guard elements. But still, I wanted more epic one of one or one on many battles and more of the emperor's champion...in duel.

Until the End!

A brilliant book that explores many previously unkown aspects of the Third War for Armageddon, the Black Templars, and Grimaldus himself. A brilliantly epic novel, this book is a must read!

A must buy!

I read this book over the last week and I can honestly say that it is a brilliant read. A D-B is one of the authors that I specifically look for now as his style of writing is a little different from a lot of other writers and is incredibly engaging. The characters of Helsreach are varied and are fleshed out well so you have an understanding of their thought processes and you feel a pang of sorrow when any die. The differences between the Astartes and humans is evident, as well as the similarities. In short, you must read this book!!!

Totally awful

Rated 2 out of 5 by Seraph_Errant

I purchased this book as an avid Templars lover. I've read every other book about them and probably every one even mentioning them. That said this was by far the worst. I will go so far as to say it is one of the worst BL books I've read (and no I haven't read all of them). It is clear A D-B did not do any of the research leg work on this scenario. It was almost like he had someone explain the whole of the battle in less then five minutes and then just made the rest up. A D-B seemed to ignore all previous works on the subject which is inexcusable. It almost makes me cry to know this is Canon.

truely for the EmpRAH!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Steve

Grahams' ultramarines books are very honourable and clean, Nicks' new Salamander series has excellent back biting and intrigue amoungst enlightened minds whilst Dorns scouts tended to get too wrapped up in their pain gloves. Grimaldus though, this book, THIS is what space marines of the Imperium should be about. The Imperium isnt a liberal democrat tea party, its a galaxy of xenophobic, facistic, intolerant hell mongers. There is no scope for compassion or joy, to quote; there is only war. This book is a celebration of everything gloriously violent and sadistic in the Emperors finest. Read it.

RYNN,S WORLD

Rated 5 out of 5 by ROO

This was the first 40,000 book that i,ve read in a long time. Due to bad health ifound my self stuck in bed for many months.I started with listing to 40k on the audio discs. They have left me hungery for more. After looking at the lists in the black libery i decided on Rynn,s world and boy what a choice! From the start i was emersed into the life of a crimson fist marine. It explained why so few crimson fists remain in the world of 40k.Filled with battles ,heros and so many stinking orks it was hard to put down. What a winner! I will read this again . I may just start painting marines once more..

Brilliantly Enjoyable

As a keen enthusiast of the Sons of Dorn in their myriad of guises i was eager to read this book, it surpassed by expectations and proved to be one of the best books i have bought from The Black Library. Aaron Demski-Bowden really conveys a gritty and dark interpretation of 40k, interlaced with politics, personal attitudes and somewhere amongst all this honour. I really enjoyed this book, from the titan battles to the inner thoughts of the troubled Chaplain Grimaldus. I look forward to reading more from this series and from Aaron Demski-Bowden!

Please BL let this guy write more books!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Roland

I own the vast majority of the BL books. Read nearly all of them. This was one of my favorites. I think his skill in writing 40k novels is on par with the very best out there. It just sucks you in and makes you want more. His human characters are fantastic and really knows how to make marines...well marines the way we like to envision them. Thanks and give this guy more to write.

Dorn is Watching

Rated 5 out of 5 by Julien

Incredible . I read that book in one day and thats was one of the best days in my life . Action , suspense, everything is in there . the author really make us live a fantastic battle through the eyes of a particular space marine , who keep evolving as the book goes .

Like the Templar Knights of old

Rated 5 out of 5 by Garrick

I liked this book a lot more than the previous Black Templars novels from the BL (Sorry, I find Brother Jarold to be a Psycho). I like how AD-B brought home the Black Templars theme of Knighthood, like the original Knights Templar. I liked the strong personalities which brings to mind certain scenes from of the movie "Kingdom of Heaven".

Greatness!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Clay

I have been blown away. While I believe there was room to improve, this story captured me and brought me to the point where it manipulated my emotions. The members of Grimauldus' Reclusiam squad could use a little more fleishing out, but Grimauldus' tale is truley beautiful. You get to see sides of Astartes life not normally seen, as well as expansion into the lives of typical Imperial citizens. This book is filled with lumbering political conflict as well as interpersonal stuggling. While the beginning may seem slow, I must say the rest of the book is totally killer.

Bring it back to Helsreach

Another vision done that is enjoyable to see more of the Space Marines battles that are mentioned in the Codex that catapulted many to the status of great hero.

I loved it! Showed how the different chapters didn't get along too well but did what they had to do. A good amount of Titan action!! A sad ending for one of the Steel Legion troops. I just wish these books would be a bit longer to show more of the ending story.

Not bad, but the ending was quite depressing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Wei Wen

Action was good, interesting battle sequences with Titans (I used to think they were boring and were little more than giant walking tanks), extremely good characterisation of Grimaldus.. but one thing I didn't like was the ending. Taking a last stand at the temple of the Sisters of Battle? The Emporer's Champion getting cut down and losing the Black Sword? A little too depressing for me.. I'm gonna read Victories of the SM when it comes out to restore my faith in the space marines!

A pleasant suprise.

Being an old Black Templar player and supporter, it would be appropriate that my first Space Marine book should be a BT one. Firstoff: They are all depicted as i think they should be. Inhuman, out of touch with the world and compleetly prejudiced. Mr. Dembski-Bowden, fine job. And may i congratulate you to on making an enjoyable book to read. It wasnt the best yet, but its well worth the time. Best part was the Stormtrooper, if you ask me. He brought a bit of humanity and humour into the book. :) I dearly recommend any Imperium supported to read this book.

Helsreach

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ryan

I am a big fan of both Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Black Templars, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as I feel I should have. The grand scale of the book was excellent, and provided an insightful look at the battle for Helsreach. However, the grittiness and desperation found in the close combat of many of the greatest Warhammer 40,000 books seems to be missing. I really enjoyed the ending.

Amazing

This is the first Imperial Space Marine book I have read. Truly the book gave me a new view on the Emporers Finess. Grimaldus was a great character in this book and I just finished it today (1-2-12; on my last day of christmas break. Reading over 160 pages in the span of a couple hours. I love this book and the Black Templars are now one of my favorite chapters. I have hopes to be an author some day, especially a Black Library one. Well I have to go back to my "freshmen" life. Thank you for the great book.

oh, you mean there IS a modern era!

Rated 5 out of 5 by William

This is the first non-HH book from BL that I ever loved. Story telling was excellent, the impossible siege story is one that's probably been done a million times since Homer, but this is every bit as good and epic as any of them. I almost wanted to grab a lasgun and stand on the wall during the Reclusiarch's speech at the beginning of the battle. A D-B is my favorite author at BL and the first one I've seen who can write Space Marines in a time period other than the HH (that said I've since learned to love some of the other authors as well - no offense guys) But this was something else.

Helsreach Review

Rated 5 out of 5 by Daan De Swaef

Once again, Aaron Dembski-Bowden shows that he knows how to spin an excellent tale. The pacing is ferocious, the writing itself is deep yet easy to follow and the action a total blast. The portrayal of Grimaldus shows a different side of the Space Marine, one we are not used to see. This only increases the quality of the book. Buy this book now. If you love the Black Templar Chapter, there is no excuse not to. But even fans of Warhammer 40K will not be able to put this book down until the very last bolt has been fired.
