Excellent read with only a few minor setbacks.

I was enthralled and impressed by this first installment in the Horus Heresy saga. It reads part like a historical recounting and part a pulp novel. The definite highlight of the book is the rich character development. You can almost feel what it is to meet a primarch from a peons perspective, while at the same time you get the feeling that the primarchs are people as well, with their own doubts, fears, and dreams. As I mentioned before this is much like a history book in that it does not have a plot structured in a way one might expect from a novel. Big plus for realism. Highly Recommended

Book One in the Endless Saga

Rated 3 out of 5 by Paul

Warmaster Horus begins his freshman exploits and the beginning of the Sons of Horus. Book One in this largely mind-boggling series attempts to give us a substantial background but, with all the hugging and gentle touching going on in this novel between male dominated supermen one could almost point out veiled homoerotica. Regardless, Abnett starts us off with a mixture of drama/action as the story takes shape with one concept in particular: 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'.

There was a time when Horus was good??

I loved this book. It was the first one in the Horus Heresy series that I read, and has gotten me hooked on all of the other books.

I agree with burrek, not the usual action from BL but a good background and great introduction of the characters

In the beggining there was light!

I liked it. It was a fun read a great start to a saga that borderlines on the mythical for 40k fans. I didn't know what to expect but it made me crave the rest of the series to the point of not really stopping! Dan Abnett had a 10 ton weight on his shoulder with givin the responsibility to start this EPIC undertaking.

Good start to an epic...

Since I've got no new books to read, thought I'll re-read the first book of the Horus Heresy series and give my opinion. Have to admit that Mr. Abnett did very well in introducing the characters and the background of the Warhammer 40,000K universe. Bet it probably wasn't easy for him to write the very first book and the beginning of the story was excellent as I thought it was the start of the rebellion already. Recommend it to die hard fans and new readers to the grim future universe...

40K noob here. I have to admit I held off reading anything 40K since I have never really cared that much for sci fi and always preferred sword and sandle fantasy. Decided to read this 40K "historical" series AND MY FREAKING GOD I AM HOOKED LIKE AN ADDICT!!! I was competely captivated by the story and writing style and could not get through it fast enough to get to book 2. Now this noob is heading across the pond to the den of madness for BL Live 2012! Conversion complete!

Couldn't 5 star it hard enough.

Great opening to what I've discovered is a great series. I'm new to the 40k universe and I am now obsessed with it, mainly because of this book.
