Bobby Wong won the 2001 Golden Demon awards Slayer Sword at the US games day with his magnificent Bloodquest squad. We invited him to tell us how he went about producing these amazing models and the article he produced proved highly popular. Now Bobby brings us his guide to converting Uriel Ventris, Ultramarine champion.
To create an UltraMarines symbol:
Backpack - I cut off the two tiny rivets on the top of the backpack then added an UltraMarines decoration to the blank panel.
Legs - Starting with the Mk7 Tactical marine legs, I removed the left leg at the hip, and then shaved off the molded flexible ribbing as well. I cut off the left Mk7 Assault Marine leg, and pinned it to the hip of the Tactical Marine legs. Greenstuff was pushed into the gap at the hip, and a ribbed texture was sculpted with a moistened needle.
To create the distinctive knee armor Uriel wears, file down the round kneepads until flat. With a needle, I carefully scribed a horizontal line across the bottom of both knees, and added an UltraMarines decoration to the left kneepad. Greenstuff was then sculpted onto the bottom of the feet to simulate armored boot soles.
Chainsword and Right Arm - The Chainsword appears master crafted with an extra motor on the hilt. I began with a plastic left Chainsword arm; cut off the pommel skull decoration, rotate it around and pin it in place facing downwards. Three spikes made from plasticard were glued to the top of the skull and a power cable was added to the handle from metal wire. The handguard, and vent on the left side of the chainsword were removed, then plasticard was added to the hilt of the Chainsword to simulate the extra motor. A small amount of Greenstuff is used to rotate the arm out at the shoulder. A plastic shoulder pad with nameplate was then cemented to the right arm.
