The Black Library | Bringing the worlds of Warhammer and Warhmmer 40,000 to life!
BloodQuest
Bobby Wong won the 2001 Golden Demon awards Slayer Sword at the US games day with his magnificent Bloodquest squad. We invited him to tell us how he went about producing these amazing models and heres what he said ...

ClotenCloten

Veteran Brother Cloten is a favorite character of many Bloodquest fans, and I wanted to model him in a headlong charge into battle, as someone afflicted with the Red Curse will do.

I used the bare head from the Landraider Accessory sprue for Cloten. I carefully shaved away any cables on the back of his head, and removed the microphone from the left side of his face. With a needle I scribed in a cleft chin, and the two long scars over his right eye. I rolled a thin sausage of greenstuff over the back of his head, flattening thinly, and then scribed the greenstuff with a needle to simulate hair. Before the greenstuff dried, I trimmed it to the correct shape, making sure he was bald at the top of his head with a modeling knife.

To ensure a sturdy miniature, I pinned the left foot onto the plastic base, and glued the torso twisted slightly to the right. Like Tranio, a tiny skull icon was glued onto the belt buckle taken from a Bolt pistol. Glue a Plasma pistol (with a Bolt gun grip) to the right thigh, and Frag grenades to the left hip. Before attaching the left Powerfist I shaved off the Space Wolf icon. The right arm was cut at the shoulder and rotated outward, until it cleared the Plasma pistol. Then add the metal shoulder pads and backpack.

WiP Tranio

Somewhere before the battle with Garshul the Destroyer in Book 1, Cloten picks up a Power Axe that resembles an Ork Choppa. To replicate this fearsome weapon, I laminated 3 sheets of plastic card, and cut it into the shape of an axe head, being careful to closely follow the design in the comics. I then sanded, and filed a bevel to both sides of the blade to get the cutting edge. Spikes from the WHFB Chaos Warrior Accessory sprue were glued to the top and back of the axe head. I then cut off the front nozzle of an plastic Marine Flamer, trimmed it to shape, and pinned it to the top of the right fist. The handle of a plastic Marine Power Axe was pinned to the bottom of the right hand. I finally pinned the axe head in place on top of the Flamer Nozzle, with a power cable added from a guitar string.

When I was painting Cloten, I felt the Powerfist looked a little bare. I decided to add a wreath decoration to indicate his veteran status.

To sculpt the wreath:

WiP Tranio

1- Roll two thin sausages of greenstuff on both sides of your gem decoration. The gem can be a simple round shape or blood drop if you prefer.
2- With a needle gently push the tip of a needle at an angle along the outside edge of each sausage of greenstuff.
3- Then repeat the same procedure for the inside of the greenstuff sausage to simulate a simple wreath shape.
