Internal intrigue, espionage, and alien conspiracy intertwine in this 7th novel of the Great Heresy. As always, Abnett launches us into the story with his signature pacing and plot development. Stuck in a war of attrition against a seemingly weaker foe, the Imerials are hard pressed and frustrated. This backdrop is but the beginning stage that will drive the forces of the Emperor's might into a stunning climax where only one choice can be made. As Abnett adds further to this convoluted volume, he gives us a rather unique take on apostasy and the forces that turn brother to war against brother.
Fantastic!

One of the best Heresy novels. It really draws together all the aspects required for a great book; conspiracy, intrigue, action, plot twists and stunning revelations. Abnett really brings the Alpha Legion to life, showing the brilliance of the Last Legion through the eyes of the Imperial Army. The novel can be described as an intricate game of cat & mouse with the galaxy hanging in the balance, with the operatives of the Imperial Army, the Alpha Legion and an Xenos intelligence all trying to outsmart each other, climaxing in a shocking revelation that will shake the foundations of the Heresy.
Ooh! It's the Alpha Legion, wait...no it's not

While I am a big fan of Abnett's work, I had real difficulty getting into this book. I did feel it had quite a few interesting twists and turns, but had so little to do with the Alpha Legion for most of the book. I feel as though I fell into the trap of judging a book by its cover. I kept wanting more and more of the legion, and kept getting less and less. I get where it's coming from, but I feel like the author tried character development by not developing the marine characters at all. When they were in the book at all, it was fantastic! It just could have been so much more...
Loved it

I especially wanted to see more of the main "human" spy- if he can be called human
