Path of the Extract

What do you think of when you think about eldar? Aspect warriors in bright colours wielding shuriken weapons and chainswords? Powerful seers changing the future and using psychic abilities to disorient and destroy their foes? What about the sinister kabalite warriors of Commorragh ? Or do you think of the rangers? Cool figures in trenchcoats, armed with longrifles, rangers are indisputably awesome. They’re also a key feature of Gav Thorpe’s forthcoming Path of the Outcast, the final book in his Eldar Path trilogy. Here’s an extract.

Beneath the Flesh

Andy Smillie’s ‘Beneath the Flesh’ hits the virtual shelves today. We managed to grab a moment with Andy (which is harder than it sounds when his day is filled with working, writing, and pumping enough iron to make a Space Marine jealous) and asked him a few questions:

Know No Fear Trailer

This is the book you’ve been waiting for: Dan Abnett brings to life the most pivotal event in the Heresy since the fall of Horus, and sees the two biggest Legions the galaxy has ever seen fight to a bloody standstill across a dying world – awesome. Watch the trailer:

Gorechild

Continuing this week's theme of power-armoured superhuman killing machines, we've got some awesome new artwork of the toughest, most skull-takingest, bloodlettingest Berzerker this side of the Eye of Terror. Those of you who have been scanning upcoming releases might have noticed the audio drama 'Chosen of Khorne' by Anthony Reynolds (of Word Bearers fame). Who else was it going to be about but Kharn the Betrayer?

Who is the Ultra Marine?

All the excitement of Know No Fear has got us thinking: who’s our favourite Ultramarine? It’s a hard choice. No other Chapters can lay claim to as many iconic figures and mighty heroes whose deeds are renowned on every world of the Imperium (as well as many a tabletop.) We narrowed it down to our top four, and we’re going to let you pick your favourite.

The Iron Without...

This weekend saw the return of the renegade Warsmith Honsou, with Iron Warriors: The Omnibus going up on pre-order, and we thought it would be cool to have a look back at the different books that have featured this charismatic anti-hero. So without further ado, Warsmith Honsou, this is your life...

Calth Burns

We could not be more excited about this book. Not only is it a new Horus Heresy novel, but it’s by Dan Abnett and it features the two largest Legions of Space Marines taking chunks out of each other in one of the most bitter battles of the war. The Black Library office is split down the middle between people who are keen to see the glorious Ultramarines in action for the first time, and those who can’t wait to see the smug smile wiped from Roboute Guilliman’s face when his proud Legion is all but obliterated.

In the grim Darkness of the 1980’s...

On the 25th of February our beloved Warhammer 40,000 celebrates its 25th birthday, which leaves us thinking, where has the time gone? As we begin our preparations for this momentous occasion, we thought we’d go all the way back to the beginning and see just how far we’ve come.

It’s a kind of magic...

We announced on Facebook yesterday that Raymond Swanland’s fantastic cover art for Blood of Aenarion has been nominated for a David Gemmell Ravenheart award for best for Best Fantasy Artwork/Bookjacket 2011. We thought we’d celebrate this by showing you his stunning cover for the next book in the series, Sword of Caledor. The cover sees Teclis, archmage extraordinaire and all-round magical bad-ass, in the throes of casting some, no doubt, frighteningly powerful spell.

A Blaze of Glory

Everyone loves knights, don’t they? Valiant warriors on noble steeds, lances lowered, charging at the enemy… and when the enemy are eight-foot tall green killing machines, the knights only seem cooler. See, for example, this extract from Josh Reynolds’s Knight of the Blazing Sun, in which Hector Goetz of the, erm, Knights of the Blazing Sun takes on the monstrous orcs.

Slayer

Did you know that the first book Black Library published, way back in 1999, was the Gotrek & Felix tome Trollslayer? This was a collection of short stories featuring the Warhammer World’s most infamous adventurers, and over the last thirteen years it has spawned no fewer than twelve novels by William King and Nathan Long, as well as the audio drama Slayer of the Storm God. Well, now the doom-seeking Slayer and his reluctant companion are returning to their short story roots in Gotrek & Felix: The Anthology, featuring ten tales of adventure and battle by a variety of established authors and new Black Library talent. Here’s an extract from Jordan Ellinger’s story, ‘Kineater’:

Catechism of Hamster

It’s nearly time! The lastest in our range of limited edition novellas – Catechism of Hate by Gav Thorpe – goes on sale in a few hours, and Black Library is a hive of activity preparing for this. The books are packed, the servers are prepared and we’ve been busily feeding the Moulder-bred gene-hamsters who power the website, fortifying them for the evening ahead. Gav Thorpe even sent in his Mechanical Hamster Dennis to add his formidable power to the servers.

bloodsports of Commorragh

The dark eldar are a vicious lot. When they’re not conducting brutal raids on Imperial worlds, killing and maiming innocents, they’re taking part in horrible bloodsports in Commorragh. Even their sporting events are deadly, as this extract from the soon-to-be-released Path of the Renegade shows.
