Christmas is nearly upon us and the year is nearly done. Here in the office, we’ve been looking back on 2011 and considering what we enjoyed most about the year. The answer, of course, is mostly cake. But also books and audio dramas. Here, in no particular order, are some of our favourites from 2011:

While it is a limited edition novella, Catechism of Hate is part of the Space Marine Battles series, and so it has the usual features of those books, such as full-colour maps by Black Library’s design supremo Adrian Wood. Here’s a sneak preview.

Black Library cover artist Jon Sullivan works at a frankly alarming rate. As well as the many covers he produces for the Space Marine Battles series, he also creates the majority of the stunning artwork for the Time of Legends novels like this brand new art for the first book in the War of Vengeance series, The Great Betrayal.

Life is tough if you’re a Chaos cultist: Chaos Space Marines boss you around, daemons wait to devour your soul and your body will inevitably become a festering carrier of warp-spawned contagion. As if that wasn’t bad enough, now you have to fight lightning claw-wielding, 7 foot-tall, genetically enhanced post-human space ninjas. It’s almost like the Chaos cultists in George Mann’s new audio drama, Labyrinth of Sorrows, didn’t listen to the first instalment in the series. If they had, they would know that to face the Raven Guard is a good way to get yourself eviscerated.

You might remember that a few weeks ago that we brought you an interview with Gav Thorpe. You might also remember that the interview was rudely interrupted by the Emperor’s Holy Inquisition just as Gav was about to spill the beans on his new limited edition novella. Well, on Friday we announced Catechism of Hate, and with the cat(echism) now firmly out of the bag, Gav can finally reveal everything you need to know about this new Ultramarines title.

Vampires have gone soft. It seems like nowadays they’re as likely to sweep you off your feet in a gesture of undying love as they are to drain your frail human form of arterial fluid. If you like your vampires to be predatory creatures of the night rather than pallid, twinkling romantics, fear not. Actually, be afraid, because on Friday you’ll be able to order the massive new Vampires omnibus, packed with grisly vampire tales to really sink your teeth into.

Space Marines are pretty scary, aren’t they? Eight feet tall, clad in nigh-impenetrable armour and able to punch a man’s head off with a single blow. So imagine how terrifying something would have to be to scare a Space Marine. Seriously, take a moment and think about it. I’ll wait here. Done? Okay, if you came up with another Space Marine, wreathed in flame, his armour decorated with bones, then you’re thinking along the same lines as Rob Sanders. Witness this section from his forthcoming Space Marine Battles novel, Legion of the Damned, in which one of the characters, injured during the Feast of Blades (like a Space Marine tea party, but with less tea and more chainswords), dreams of such a spectre…

The Isstvan landings didn’t go very well for the Raven Guard. They got what is commonly referred to as a ‘right good kicking’. Gav Thorpe’s new Horus Heresy novel Deliverance Lost picks up the story as the depleted Legion flees from the dropsite massacre and back to Terra. As any seasoned Horus Heresy can probably guess, their getaway does not quite go to plan... Quite a lot has happened in the seventeen novels in the Horus Heresy series so far, so here’s a short trailer to bring you up to speed before Deliverance Lost:

Hive of the Dead is the first ever Warhammer 40,000 gamebook. Using rules reminiscent of those in the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game, albeit without models and terrain, you can venture through a hive-world infested with flesh eating zombies, ghouls and worse. With only this book, a six sided dice and a pencil, you can battle the zombie hordes from the comfort of your armchair. To give you a taste of the action, we thought we would play through Hive of the Dead on the Black Library blog every day this week, letting you choose our route through the post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested ruins.

Fear the Alien, the xenos-themed anthology, is now available to download as an eBook and as individual eShorts. So you can buy the whole book, or just your favourite story from the collection. Today’s influx in xenos-related fiction got us talking about the alien races in Warhammer 40,000 we were most afraid of. It’s hard to choose. I mean, would you rather be viscerally disembowelled by the whirling chain-blade of an ork choppa or ripped limb-from-limb by an inhuman genestealer? Or even dragged off to Commorragh, the Dark City, by cackling dark eldar slavers?

August 20th to be precise. Path of the Seer is the second book in Gav Thorpe’s Path of the Eldar series, the first time we’ve had novels told from an eldar point of view. Like the skeins of fate that a farseer manipulates to see the future, the three tomes in the series intertwine, their stories linking together rather than following one after another like traditional series. The second volume follows the adventures of Thirianna, a poet who becomes a farseer and sees a great calamity approaching... Today we give you an extract from the novel, as Thirianna takes her first steps on the Path of the Seer...

With the release of Nagash Immortal marking the conclusion of the Rise of Nagash trilogy, this momentous chronicle of one of the darkest times in Warhammer history draws to a close. But the Warhammer World is seldom at peace and as of May next year, the Old World is plunged into one of the most chaotic and bloody ages in its history, as the very forces that opposed the necromancer Nagash seek to destroy the land of men. As with the first three trilogies in our Time of Legends range, Jon Sullivan has produced another breathtaking cover, encapsulating the Empire in a desperate struggle against plague and invasion.

A few weeks ago I received a very surprising bit of news – Age of Darkness had made it to number 31 on the New York Times bestseller list for Mass Market Paperback Fiction. You may wonder why that came as a surprise when the previous four books in the Horus Heresy series had all made the list and the authors of all four of those had contributed stories to the anthology, but the thing is this – anthologies hardly ever make the NYT bestseller list.

If you’re one of the lucky few (well, 3,000 actually) who’ve managed to order a copy then you’re in for a fat slice of Salamanders Legionary action. Viva la Revolucion! The novel is dead, long live the short story! Perhaps not, but there is a lot to be said for short fiction: it allows authors to explore a new genre or develop a group of characters without committing to a full novel. As readers we benefit too: a short story can prove the ideal accompaniment to a longer novel and give us a chance to fit in a whole adventure before bed.
